1. Special Ballet "the Legend of My Chau & Trong Thuy"

8 pm November 24&25, 2010 at Hanoi Opera House

the Vietnam National Opera & Ballet proudly presents a Special Ballet "the Legend of My Chau & Trong Thuy". Based on the Legend Story, the choreographer mined out and modulated into a dance drama, the dance scenes were choreographed to show mainly around theme of love with the desire to praise timeless love.

Summary of the Legend
In the second century BC, Việt Nam was a country named Âu Lạc ruled by King An Dương Vương whose name prior to coronation was Thục Phán. He had only one daughter, whose name was Mỵ Châu. The State’s capital was located at Cổ Loa where the King built a fortress and ramparts. Yet, whatever was built in the day was subsequently demolished at night by evil spirits. The King held a religious ceremony and begged Heavens for assistance. There upon, a golden tortoise came and gave guidance to the King on how to do away with the malfeasance of evil spirits. As a result, the fortress and ramparts could be completed. In biding farewell, the golden tortoise presented the King with one of its claws. The King turned the claw into the trigger of his crossbow, a single arrow of which could shoot thousands of enemy troops. The crossbow was thus called as the Magic Crossbow or Tortoise Crossbow.

By then, a rebel Chinese General, Zhao To, established in Southern China a Kingdom called Nam Việt. He tried to conquer Âu Lạc State, but his military adventures ended in failure because of the magic Crossbow. Resorting to a different strategy, Zhao To sought peace and requested Thục Phán to give consent to marriage between Trọng Thủy, Zhao To’s son, and Mỵ Châu, Thục Phán’s daughter. Thục Phán gave his agreement that Trọng Thủy could, as son-in-law, stay in Âu Lạc Kingdom in keeping with the practice of uxorilocality with bride service.
Taking advantage of his wife’s deep feeling of love and credulity, Trọng Thủy stole the secrets of the magic crossbow. Thereafter, he sought permission from Thục Phán to return home for visiting his parents. In departing, Trọng Thủy said to his wife, “In case war breaks out between our countries some time in the future, how can I find you?” His thoughtless wife replied, “I’ve got a coat made of goose feathers. I’ll take them out and scatter them wherever I go.”

Thereafter, Zhao To launched a new war of aggression against Âu Lạc. Being overconfident in his magic crossbow, Thục Phán did not make adequate defense preparation. When enemy troops surrounded the Cổ Loa Fortress, Thục Phán started his crossbow but found it useless. He had barely time to put his daughter on horseback and ride away at full gallop to the south. When he came near the sea coast, the golden tortoise appeared. The King asked “Oh, Golden Tortoise, why have I lost my Kingdom?” Immediately the Tortoise replied, “Your enemy is just behind you.” As the truth suddenly dawned on him, the King drew his sword and killed his daughter, and then followed the golden tortoise into the sea. The sea waves brought the corpse of Mỵ Châu to Cổ Loa, and when the villages brought it ashore it became a big stone which is still kept and worshipped in a small temple near an old banyan tree. Trọng Thủy also suffered from the loss of his wife. One day, he came to a well in front of the former palace of King An Dương Vương. As he saw the face of Mỵ Châu on the surface of the water of the well, he plunged into the well and died. The blood which poured from Mỵ Châu’s body into the sea - as the result of the cut from her father’s sword - was swallowed by oysters and shelves which subsequently produced peals. Popular imagination even went so far to assert that if the peals were washed in the water of the well where Trọng Thủy died, they would become much brighter.

SCRIPT
Scenes:
Prelude: Trong Thuy is alone in front of a well, dressed in a costume of today. He seems to be waiting for something or someone. He is hiding a little box that looks like a present. Two elderly men pass by in an animated discussion also in nowadays costumes.
I : The dream:
Trong Thuy is dreaming: in his dream, the two elderly men reveal to be King An Dong Vuong and the genie of the Golden Turtle. The genie of the Golden Turtle visits King An Dong Vuong, hands him the magic claw and disappears.
II : First battle against Loa Thành’s fortress.
Group dance: the soldiers are waiting for the enemies while provoking them. Cao Lo urges the King to act. Finally, King An Dong Vuong shoots an arrow with his crossbow. The enemies disappear. Victory dance.
III : In the house of General Trieu Da : The general and his two lieutenants are furious. They try to find a way to enter the fortress. Trong Thuy arrives. Trieu Da explains his plan and Trong Tuy obediently accepts to go along.
IV : Peace with China.
A: In the palace inside the fortress: My Chau and her lady in waiting are waiting impatiently for the Chinese embassy, led by Prince Trong Tuy.
B : The dignitaries of the Empire of China visit the court of Au Lac to make peace. They arrive and offer presents. Trong Tuy appears in the end and is introduced as a possible husband for the princess.
The King starts a welcome dance to show his power and his contentment. The Prime Minister and some others dignitaries warn him, while Mi Chau sees the prince for the first time. They fall in love instantly.
Happy to discover the natural inclination of the two youngsters for each other, the King accepts the proposal and shows his acceptance with a dance together with his best soldiers.

V : The wedding of My Chau and Trong Thuy
The wedding ceremony: group dances and pas de deux between the newlyweds. The scene ends with a general dance in which Trong Tuy learns the traditional dance of the Kingdom of Au Lac and is thus accepted by the Au Lac population.
VI : The dream and the betrayal of Trong Thuy :
A : Hiding in the shade, Trieu Da has been watching the feast and he understands that his son is in love. He dresses as a ghost with dusty clothes and a green mask and enters the wedding room where the two lovers are asleep.
B : Trong Tuy dreams about the war and the promise he made to his father. He wakes up in anguish and discovers what he believes to be the ghost of his father. Trieu Da takes advantage of the terror of his son to remind him the purpose of his marriage (duo between father and son).
C : My Chau wakes up with a start. The so-called ghost disappears. My Chau finds her husband in despair. She tries to calm him down. After more questioning, she tells him the secret of the magic claw. She puts on a swan feather’s coat and plays with the feathers, explaining that he will be able to trace her anywhere thanks to the fallen feathers.
D: Later that night, the prince approaches the magic weapon and exchanges the claw in a hurry. He is desperate having to do so and disappears.
VII : The second battle against Loa Thành’s fortress.
Dance of the soldiers waiting for the enemies. Finally An Dong Vuong shoots an arrow with his crossbow. But this time nothing happens and his army is defeated.
VIII : The escape of An Duong Vuong and the death My Chau
The king and his daughter escape the fortress in fire together with the lady in waiting and Cao Lo. But during the escape, the king and the princess are left alone. They are exhausted and reach the seashore where they try to comfort each other. Mi Chau seems to lose her mind and turns against her father.
While they are there, the genie of the Golden Turtle comes out of the water and reveals that Mi Chau has been using the feathers so that Trong Tuy could find her back. In a fit of rage, the king kills her daughter then runs and throws himself into the sea, while the Chinese guards and Trong Thuy reach the shore.
IX: Mourning of Trong Thuy.
There is a long period of silence, while everyone tries to understand what has happened. Then slowly, the Chinese guards prepare a litter to carry the body of Princess Mi Chau back to the fortress. Prince Trong Tuy is left alone mourning.
The prince is about to throw himself into the well.
Then an image appears backstage of My Chau as a girl of today’s Hanoï. Duo between the reunited couple in modern times. The young man offers his little box to the young girl. It contains two pearls. In the background, the daily traffic of Hanoï’s streets has replaced the warriors of the Kingdom of Au Lac. Sounds effects of the street traffic in Hanoï mixed with a modern song about lovers

Mở màn: Boi Canh thoi hien dai
Chang thanh nien trong trang phục thời hiện đại đứng một mình trước dòng nước tay cầm gói quà nhỏ như chờ đợi điều gì hay ai đó. Hai người đàn ông lớn tuổi đi ngang qua sôi nổi bàn luận với nhau, họ cũng trong trang phục thời hiện đại.
Cảnh 1. Giấc mơ
Hoàng tử mơ : trong giấc mơ, Hai người đàn ông lớn tuổi biến thành Nhà vua và Thần Kim Quy. Thần Kim Quy trên tay có chiếc lẫy nỏ thần gặp Nhà vua rồi biến mất.
Cảnh 2. Khúc khải hoàn
Trong boi canh quân địch khêu khích. Qu©n sü vµ Tướng quân thúc giục Nhà vua hành động. Cuối cùng Nhà vua cầm nỏ thÇn lên bắn. Quân địch biến mất. Vang ca khúc khải hoàn.
Cảnh 3. Tại nước khác: Vua cha và 2 tể tướng tức giận. Họ tìm cách để tiếp cận vào thành . Hoàng tử đến. Vua cha trình bày kế hoạch cho con trai và Hoàng tử đồng ý đi theo cùng.
Cảnh 4. Hòa bình
A>Trong thành, Công chúa cùng vú em của mình thấp thỏm chờ đợi đoàn sứ giả do Hoàng tử dẫn đầu.
B> Quần thần hai nước hòa giải, cống nạp. Cuối cùng Hoàng tử xuất hiện và được giới thiệu là lao động đường phố mã tương lai.
Nhà vua bắt đầu những bước nhảy chào mừng, phô trương thanh thế và sự mãn nguyện của mình. Tướng quân và các quan nhắc Nhà vua phải đề phòng. Trong khi đó, Công chúa gặp Hoàng tử lần đầu và đã phải lòng nhau.
Vui mừng khi phát hiện ra đôi bạn trẻ tự nhiên hướng đến nhau. Nhà vua đồng ý với lời cầu thân, Nhà vua thể hiện sự chấp nhận qua những bước nhảy cùng với cận thần của mình.
Cảnh 5. Đám cưới của Công chúa và Hoàng tử
Lễ cưới : Múa tập thể và múa đôi của vợ chồng trẻ. Cảnh này kết thúc khi Hoàng tử tham gia vào bước nhảy truyền thống của vương quốc nhà vợ và được dân chúng hoan nghênh.
Cảnh 6. Giấc mơ của Hoàng tử
A> Dấu mình trong bóng tối, Vua cha của Hoàng tử theo dõi yến tiệc và hiểu rằng con trai mình đã yêu. Vua cha ăn mặc như bóng ma, quần áo tàn tro với mặt nạ màu xanh bước vào phòng cưới nơi đôi tân lang tân nương đang say ngủ.
B> Hoàng tử mơ thấy chiến tranh và những gì đã hứa với Vua cha. Hoàng tử bừng tỉnh trong đau khổ và phát hiện ra bóng ma đó chính là cha mình. Lợi dụng sự khiếp sợ của Hoàng tử, Vua cha đã nhắc nhở con trai mình về mục đích cầu thân.
C> Công chúa giật mình choàng dậy. Công chúa thấy chồng mình đang tuyệt vọng. Công chúa cố gắng giúp chồng bình tâm lại.Sau nhiều lần Hoàng tử vặn hỏi, Công chúa kể cho chồng nghe về bí mật của nỏ thần. Sau đó, Công chúa mặc chiếc áo lông nghỗng vµ giËt chiếc lông ngỗng rơi ra råi nói rằng Hoàng tử có thể tìm được mình theo dấu những chiếc lông ngỗng này để tìm nhau.
Đêm khuya đó, Hoàng tử tiếp cận được với nỏ thần và vội vàng tráo móng thần. Hoàng tử hành động trong tuyệt vọng rồi biến mất.
Cảnh 7. Sự chủ quan của Nhà vua
Quan dich lai khieu khích. Nhà Vua mang nỏ thần ra bắn nhưng không hiệu nghiệm, quân ta đã bị thua.
Cảnh 8. Sự trốn chạy
Trong khói lửa Nhà Vua và Công chúa chạy trốn vào rừng cùng Tướng quân và người vú em. Nhưng trong lúc trốn chạy ho đã lạc nhau, chỉ còn lại 2 cha con. Khi den bên bờ biển, ho kiệt sức va cố gắng an ủi nhau. Thay quan dich duoi theo, Cong chúa phát hoảng và trách cứ cha mình.
Thần Kim Quy xuất hiện tiết lộ rang chinh nhung chiec lông ngỗng roi ra tu ao của Công chúa la dấu vết cho quân địch dò theo. Trong tột đỉnh của cơn tức giận, Nhà Vua đã giết con gái mình rồi nhảy xuống biển.
Cảnh 9. Khúc nguyện cầu của Hoàng tử
A. Thoi gian nhu ngung troi, canh quan dich khiêng thi thể của Công chúa về Thành. Hoàng tử bị bỏ lại một mình trong đau khổ tuyet vong.
B. Quay lai khuc mo man:Tren phông nền cảnh giao thông đường phố ngay nay thay thế cho cảnh chiến trận x­a xua.
Công chúa hien ra trong trang phục thời nay vµ chàng trai tang cô gái hộp quà nhỏ, trong đó là 2 viên ngọc trai do. Sù doàn tụ của cặp đôi trong thoi hien dai minh chung cho tinh yeu vinh cuu.
