Draw from any man available either by the local government or more often band together to protect their home when needed . Arms with light wooden crossbow and traditional Vietnamese's machete the "rua". Rallying in mobility mean they didn't wear any kind of protection beside a small rattan shield hanging in the back. What's more as the masters of ambush, hit and run tactic their hiding skill is perfect so these men can hide almost anywhere. Quan Du Kich was a workhorse of the army. These light skirmisher is a very useful and versatile force. As the master of guerrilla warfare Quan Du Kich can be use as the raiding party, scout or ambushers. In garrison duty, along side with Dan Quan or Huong Dung they made a good garrison force. These irregular missile troops can also take a significant role on the battlefield. They can weaken the enemy's army with the hails of arrows. Keep in mind that these troops is volunteers not soldiers so don't let them fight alone again regular force or they will choose to fight another the day before you order them to do so. 2) Medium / regular Cung Thu (Archers): hybrid archer arms with composite bamboo bow and large knives round wooden shield, and leather hat (Tu Phuong Binh hat). Act as archers and light melee infantry descr: Cung Thu simply mean archer. Recruited from lower class of Viet's society via "ngu binh u nong" system. These hybrid semi-regular archers was trained to use the bamboo bow which related to composites bow. Beside the bow they also carried a large knives and a round wooden shield for melee combat. Used mainly to weaken the enemy and support the main army. Cung Thu played a vital role in Viet's army. Since Daiviet favored the mobility, hit and run warfare so these men also trained to protect themselves and support other in melee. They're however best use to stay behind the shields and spears of the other units while weaken the enemy from a far. Then they can act as light melee infantry. In Dai Viet there're a system call "ngu binh u nong". These simple system was used for very long time (from 11th century until early 17 century) with great effect. Literally any man over 20 ages will be levy into the army. It's mean in the war time almost any man is the soldiers. In peace time however, most of troops (can be 5/6 of the total levy army) will be send home to farming and live their normal life in a certain months (roundly 8-10 months per year). Then they will be concentrated again for a military purpose and training. In Le dynasty even the Imperial Guard was send home for farming. This cycle will ensure both economic and security of the state since the country can maintain a very large army (almost the entire people) but still not harm the economic! Like any militia force they're good in patrol, keeping order and garrison duty (even now militia arms with bamboo sticks still patrol every night for people's security). Unlike most other militias however Dan Quan can (and they actually was) found themselves in the mid of battles rather often! In battle their nasty stone will give the enemy headache (literally not figuratively), they can also used as canon folder or provide support for more professional force or simply boots the number of the army. They will fight and fight hard again any invaders to protect their family and their homeland. Of course these folks will melt away quickly again true soldiers and vulnerable again all kind of missile fire. 2. Huong Dung (Viet's Villages Watchmen) Spear militia arms with bamboo spears, some javelin and round rattan shield Unit description: Like in many country, each villages or town in Daiviet often maintain some regional troops to keep the order, night patrol, fight again criminal, guarding trade rout or bridge. They're under the command of local authority. Huong Dung was also act as border guard of Daiviet. In the time of war these men was either in charge to defense their village or support the main army. Recruited from lower class people and sometime old men or retired veteran. Arms with bamboo spears, some javelin and round rattan shield for protection. Though have some training these men are not true soldiers so don't expect them to hold back again professional troops for long. They're best serve in garrison duty and raiding along with Du Kich Quan. Received some training, better arms and numerous Huong Dung are somewhat more useful than Dan Binh on the field of battle. Huong Dung made a excellent reserve force. Place them behind a more professional troops is a good tactic since they can wear down the enemy line with javelin and then support the main force with their spear. Giao Binh (Regulars infantry) Regular Infantry: unarmored, arms with javelin, overhead spear and large wooden oval shield Unit description: Giao Binh mean spearman. Conscription from any man over 20 of Dai Viet's society via the "ngu binh u nong" system. These solid spearman along with pikeman formed the bulk of Dai Viet army. They're rather well trained and discipline soldiers. Their weapons the overhead spear, the large wooden oval shield and some javelin was provide by the state. Cam Quan was a very effect fighting force. Historically even the Mongol horde was unable to beat them. Small in number but these man can made the whole enemy's army run for their life. They're also useful to counter the enemy elite force or protect the generals (and the emperor) as well. However it's a waste and unwise to use them without support. Though superior their number is small and hard to train. Place them in the crucial positions and let them strike fear into the enemy as well as inspire the other unit is the best way to carry the day. Soon these elite force has become a elite unit of Daiviet's army with the name "Thanh Duc". In 1466, Emperor Le Thanh Tong (Second Le dynasty) reformed the army.
