March 10, 2006 - Developed during the latter portion of the Ming Dynasty, Tang Lang Ch'uan, the Northern Praying Mantis style of kung fu, is relatively new by the standards of Chinese martial arts. It is generally thought to have originated around 1600 AD, founded by a boxer named Wang Lang. Seeking to improve his skills, he had journeyed from his home in Shantung province to the Shaolin temple at Honan. While there, he happened to witness a battle in which a mantis defeated a far larger opponent, a cicada. Hoping to learn from the insect, the fighter took it back to his quarters and studied its movements, combining them with his previous training and footwork derived from the monkey style. His students adapted a number of variants bearing picturesque names such as Plum Blossom, Seven Stars, Secret Door, Jade Ring, Six Harmony and Dragging Hand.

Slated to launch in the North American market later this year, 9Dragons is a martial arts-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game set during a period of great turmoil when China's great clans were forced to rely upon their unique philosophies and the related fighting techniques for survival. Already a hit in Korea, the home market for developer Indy21, it has a total of nine factions players can join. One is the famed Shaolin who are associated with the praying mantis style. Five others are the Wu-tang, Gaipan, Lu-lin, Mi-gong and Mo-jiao, with the remaining three as yet unknown. When we found out that Acclaim Games was making plans to bring the title over here, our reaction was exactly as you'd expect. Our interest in knowing more about it became even greater, leading to this query session with CEO Howard Marks.

Jonric: To introduce 9Dragons, what's it about, what high-level goals are embodied in its design and play balance, and to what does the title refer?

Howard Marks: 9Dragons is set in the world of China during the Ming Dynasty. This was a lawless and rough part of Chinese history, and the people developed martial arts skills to help them survive the marauding bandits and evil warlords that were preying on them.
[align=center]we are taking a great deal of care with the translation to keep the game in line with North American tastes. We have engaged the talents of a top Hollywood scriptwriter to make the game story as engaging as possible.

The underlying premise of the game is for you to rise from a peasant to martial arts master by learning key martial arts moves from your clan (or Dragon). In ancient China, there were nine clans (nicknamed Dragons) that each developed a method of martial arts to defend themselves.

The high-level design goals were for a story- and quest-driven game where the players made a real difference in the world they inhabit. 9Dragons has all the features you would expect from a contemporary MMO (crafting, exploration, instanced dungeons, etc.), but its real strength is in the combat skills and the way the player works to develop them. No two players will use their skills in the same way. For example, instead of just going to a trainer and being given a skill, the gamer must earn their skills through mini-games, and then they must practice them to become proficient. Each skill is a combination of punches and kicks that develop in combinations as the player grows in stature. Skills are not only external. The internal or "Chi" skills, meditation and growth of internal power are also critical. This is a thinking gamer's game. It is very quest-driven to keep the player engaged in the world and developing their skills.
